The Manchester Stone was found during the excavation of an ancient Roman Settlement near Manchester and has been dated approximately 280 a.c.
During Roman times The Sator-Rotas Square was considered a very powerful charm for protection. It was written on all manner of tools, dwellings, utensils, and furniture. It was believed that if written on a wooden plate and thrown into a fire, the fire would be extinguished.
Manchester Stone At one time, the Roman Law required households to keep such an inscribed plate available in emergencies, much as we keep chemical fire extinguishers in modern day homes.
The earliest known example of The Sator-Rotas Square was found in 1939 written on the wall of the Palestra at Pompeii where it was dated 79 a.c.
